With a long time reputation of being one of the friendliest and most All-American cities, Abilene is definitely a fine place to get a college education. ACU was founded in 1906 and today has an enrollment of approximately 4,700 students. That makes it one of the largest private universities in the Southwest.
If you look on the map, it kind of seems like Abilene is out in the middle of nowhere, but folks that live there seem to appreciate the many offerings of their beloved city. Several shopping malls, specialty shops, restaurants, two hospitals and a regional airport ensure that there is little lacking in comparison with much larger cities. Abilene also is ranked second in cultural events per capita in the state and one of the lowest crime rates.
